TeamBuilder is a web utility for creating teams for competitions and entering and managing people into those teams. TeamBuilder is used by most team sports in New Zealand as the method for clubs and schools to enter teams into competitions, and to put players into those teams. You can perform all TeamBuilder actions from desktop computer, tablet or mobile.
Access TeamBuilder via your Dashboard then clicking the TeamBuilder tile. You can perform all Teambuilder actions from desktop, tablet or mobile. If you don't have a login or know how to go to the Dashboard, please see this article on Getting Started with Sporty.
Choose your Competition
Once you launch TeamBuilder, you'll see a list of your player databases (e.g. Netball Registration 2024, Rugby Player Registration 2024, etc.).
When Teams register directly
If you see text that states 0 teams or another number of teams next to the participant database, your TeamBuilder is configured so you can enter your teams directly against your participant database, and your competition administrator will decide which competition your team will be entered into based on your team's grade.
Click the Database name to work with TeamBuilder to create teams, add players to teams and more.
When using Team Entry Forms
If you see text that states 0 competitions or another number of competitions with an arrow next to the TeamBuilder database like the image below, your TeamBuilder is set-up so you enter teams directly into a competition, tournament or event, with the competition administrator restricting which clubs or schools can enter teams, and which grades are offered for that competition, tournament or event.
Click the arrow icon to expand the database and view all competitions.
If no competition exists yet, please contact your competition administrator.
If you have already entered teams into a competition, you can click the arrow to expand to quickly view the teams entered.
Click into individual teams to open the team view.
Alternatively, click the competition name, e.g. Competition: School Sport - Football Comp to open TeamBuilder for the competition.
If a person is ONLY a Team Admin/Team Manager they will only be able to view the teams at a glance and click to open only their team from TeamBuilder.
Note: If you are a competition administrator that is using SKED, you have more options available to you in Teambuilder. Click here to learn more about TeamBuilder for Competition Administrators.
Opening TeamBuilder
TeamBuilder displays a list of the people registered into the database on the left. It also lets you add teams to the grades displayed on the right.
To do so, click to expand the grade by clicking the grade name, e.g. Premier 1, then click + Add Team.
For more detailed instructions on how to add a team to a grade click here.
Once you've added a team, you can move people into the team by using your mouse to click and drag a person from the left and then drop them over the icon to the team on the right.
Alternatively, you can add multiple people to the team at once by clicking the checkboxes next to their names, then selecting Move People to Team.
You can use the tools in the blue bar at the top to help you filter, search or sort your database to make grouping people for team selection easier.

TeamBuilder display features
Click here for information about the team view.
The black bar in the middle of TeamBuilder can be moved up and down (on mobile) or left to right (on desktop/tablet) to provide you with more visibility of player information or teams.
TeamBuilder keeps track of the number of people in a team and not in a team, so you can easily find people to add to your teams and make sure all participants are assigned to teams.
Sporty supports different versions of TeamBuilder for different sports.
For example, for the sport of rugby, TeamBuilder displays the weight of players since this is often used to determine which grade/team a player must be allocated to, or a ! displays if a coach or volunteer requires their ID to be verified for police vetting .
If your sporting code requires people to be made active before they should participate, they will be displayed in Red instead of Black in TeamBuilder.
TeamBuilder also displays people that are marked as inactive or transferred in grey italics to indicate the person is no longer identified as an active participant at your club or school.
If your sporting code allows your participants to be registered to multiple teams concurrently within a season, they will be displayed in italics.
By default, TeamBuilder will display Team Entries closing date, and a Player selection closing date. These dates are set by your competition administrator. You are unable to add or edit teams after the team entry cut-off date, and will be unable to add players to a squad for game day team selection if the player registers after the grade's player selection cut-off.
When people are placed into teams, if they are a player, a coloured circle will appear around the team, with the number of players in the team displayed. If the colour of the circle is red, there are compliance requirements identified that you will need to resolve for the team to be eligible for the competition.
People with compliance issues will display with a red ! when you open the team.
Compliance checks could be for a variety of reasons depending on your Sport and competition organiser:
- your competition administrator requires a minimum number of coaches or players to be entered for the team,
- a person needs their registration to be approved,
- a person needs their ID to be checked for Police Vetting
- a person needs more details to be entered on their registration form (they have bypassed mandatory fields)
