The New Zealand Football Regulations on the Status and Transfers of Players (RSTP) defines the rules for football in New Zealand regarding the status of Players, their eligibility to participate in Organised Football, and their movement between Clubs.
When a player registers with a club using the official NZ Football registration system (Sporty) the club is required to activate the record. Detailed instructions for how to activate a registration are here. If successful, the status of the record in Sporty will become set to "Active". This is important, because the player is not deemed to be fully registered until the club has approved the registration by activating the record.
However, there are some instances when clubs will be unable to activate a player's registration due to NZF rules. This includes instances where:
- The player is already actively registered with another club (termination required).
- A Red Flag exists against the player for a previous season's registration at another club.
Note: if the player has a Red Flag at your own club, you will still be able to activate them - The player is registering to NZ Football for the first time AND their nationality or country of birth is not New Zealand, OR the person has previously registered with NZ Football, but they have most recently transferred out of New Zealand (international clearance required).
This support article relates to Red Flags. Clubs can set a Red Flag against a player's record to prevent the player from being activated. For example, a club may decide to do this if the player has not returned gear or paid their membership fees.

IMPORTANT: If a club sets a Red Flag against a player, the player is automatically emailed a notification:
Setting a Red Flag
Clubs are able to set new Red Flags against player records from 30 June - 31 December each year. However, clubs can remove/delete a Red Flag at any time of year.

What happens when a Red Flag is invoked?
If a player registers with another club while a Red Flag is in place, when the registration is attempted to be approved by the Club Administrator, an error will indicate the player has a Red Flag in place.
The Club Administrator can then request a player termination from the club that applied the Red Flag. This will trigger an email to that club. If they approve the termination, the Red Flag will be removed and the player will automatically be set to Active at their new club.
Note: If a player registers with your club in the current season, but you had applied a Red Flag to them in a previous season, their activation button will display as a red icon with an exclamation mark. As your club applied the original Red Flag, you can still activate the player’s registration for the current season. However, the Red Flag will remain on their record, and any related restrictions will still apply.
