Complete the MSNZ Competition Licence form to get a Competition digital licence - this is required to attend any MSNZ event. Use this form to apply for a Junior, National, or International licence, or a Foreign Licence Recognition.
Before you can apply for an MSNZ Competition Licence, you must first have an approved and current club membership.

- Your personal details will auto-complete from your profile.
- Complete all other fields and check the terms and conditions, then click Next.
- If required, complete the medical assessment form.
- Pay any fees shown in the payment cart.
- If this is a new M, C, or R grade licence, you may need to book an exam (see Understanding Grades below for what these grades mean).
Once everything required has been submitted, MSNZ will review your application. Once approved, you'll receive a confirmation email and be able to view your licence in the MotorSport New Zealand app.

Grades
The list of grades you can apply for appears once you enter your date of birth: Junior grades are available for ages 12-15, and Senior grades for ages 16 and up.
Each grade has its own rules:
- New Application - whether this grade is available to select on a brand-new licence application.
- Can Upgrade To - the grades available to upgrade to from this one.
- Medical Assessment Required - whether a medical assessment is required on application (and potentially on renewal).
- Examination Required - whether a passed exam is required to complete the application. Exams aren't required again at renewal, and can be taken up to 6 months before applying, or any time before the application is approved.

Overseas Declaration
If you were born outside New Zealand, you'll need to upload proof of an NZ visa or an NZ address.
Foreign Licence Recognition
If you're competing on a licence issued by an overseas ASN (national motorsport authority), complete the Competition Licence form and select Foreign Licence Recognition as the grade, then enter your licence and visa details.
Note: Foreign Licence Recognition is available for competitors under 16 years old.
If you're a New Zealand citizen and would like to purchase an international visa, this fee will be charged on your application.
New, Renew, Upgrade, and Downgrade
New: If you're new to MotorSport, you can apply for a new competition licence once your MotorSport Club Membership application has been approved. If you have a current licence, or one that expired in the last 24 months, you won't be able to apply for a new licence in that same discipline - you'll need to renew the existing one instead. For example, if you hold a C1 Grade licence, C-grade and M-grade licences won't be available to choose from; you'll only be able to select from grades you don't currently hold.
Renew: You can renew a licence if it's not more than 24 months old. Renewing copies all fields from your original licence and locks the grade field.
Upgrade: You can upgrade a licence if it's not more than 24 months old. A pro-rata fee applies, based on the cost of the new licence and the remaining months on your current one. The expiry date is retained from the original licence.
Upgrade to an International Licence: This charges the full price and sets the expiry date to 31 December of that year - unless you apply in November or December, in which case it expires 31 December of the following year.
Downgrade: You can downgrade a licence if it's not older than 24 months. No fees are charged or refunded for downgrading, and the expiry date is retained from the original licence.
Upgrading to a Senior Licence
Juniors can upgrade their Junior grade licence to a Senior grade once they turn 16. To do this, complete an upgrade licence application and choose either the equivalent senior grade or higher.
Multi Grade Licences
If you currently hold a Rally or Race licence and apply for a new licence in the other discipline, you'll only be charged the higher of the two fees. The new licence's expiry date is set to match your existing licence, and both grades will then display on your digital licence.
If you upgrade to an international licence while holding another national licence, that national licence's expiry date is updated to 31 December.
You can renew multiple licences at once: click Renew and choose to renew a single licence or both. This opens both applications for you to review. You may still be required to complete a medical assessment before proceeding to the payment cart.
Junior and Upgrade Exemptions
If you need an exemption on a Junior licence or an upgrade, you can apply for this on the licence application form - enter the details required for the exemption to be processed.
Parental Consent
Parental consent is required if you're younger than 18. Fill in the parent/guardian details, then download and print the Junior Indemnity Declaration. This needs to be signed by a parent or guardian, then uploaded into the application.
Application Status
Depending on the grade you're applying for, a medical assessment or licence exam may be required - these need to be completed before a licence can be approved. (Renewals never require a new exam.)
Your application will show one of these statuses:
- Pending - the application has been lodged and is waiting for MSNZ to review it.
- Approved - MSNZ has reviewed the licence and all conditions are satisfied.
- Declined - MSNZ has reviewed the application and declined it.
- Disabled - the licence has been disabled, either because it's historic or because MSNZ has revoked it.
Note: if your MSNZ Competition Licence is approved but you don't have an approved club membership, you won't be able to race. You may still register for an event, but you may not be able to sign in at the event itself.
Expiry Date
- ClubSport or National licences: the expiry date is set to 12 months after the last day of your approval month. Renewing adds 12 months to your current expiry date.
- International licences: the expiry date is set to 31 December of that year - unless you apply in November or December, in which case it's set to 31 December of the following year.
After Submitting
After completing the form, a payment cart will open for you to pay your application fees. Once payment is complete, you may be given a medical assessment form to fill in - you can either complete it straight away (Submit) or come back to it later (Save). If you save it, you can edit it at any time, and click Submit once it's finished.
