Instead of having a large background image, you may opt to use a smaller image and tile it as a pattern. Here's how to tile your background image:
Click on Site Settings > Background
Click on your background image to select it, or if you haven't yet uploaded it, upload it and select it.
Click on the Tile Wallpaper checkbox under Current Wallpaper.
Click Save.
