A Māori rugby league player can only be registered with one club at a time. If a player wishes to play for a different club than the one they were registered with last season, or is already registered in the current season and wants to move, a transfer must be completed. This article explains the transfer process.
Club administrators can view and manage transfer requests through the Online Registrations area of their Sporty site. Transfer requests are submitted by the club the player wishes to join and must be approved or declined by the club the player is leaving (or coming from).
If the transfer request is not actioned manually by the club administrator, the request will be automatically approved 10 days after the transfer request is submitted.
All club administrators with Database Admin access will receive email notifications when:
- A new transfer request is submitted (sent to the administrators of the leaving club).
- A transfer is approved or declined (sent to the administrators of the requesting club).
If you do not wish for emails to appear in your inbox, you can create a 'rule' in your email account to automatically move each email into a specific folder.
Note: Anyone who has Database Admin access can approve/decline the transfer.

Requesting a Transfer
When a player registers with the club they intend to play for, the registration has the status of Pending until a club administrator approves it by clicking the green approval button.
When the player's registration is approved, the system will check whether the player is registered with another club either in the current season, or in the previous season. If the system does find a match, a prompt will appear requesting that a player transfer be made.
While a transfer request is awaiting approval, their registration will display in the database as "Transfer Pending".
How to monitor Māori Rugby League Transfers
Go to Online Registrations to view transfers against your NZMRL Registration form.
1) Log into your Sporty site. If you're unsure of your club site, please search for it here via our Clubs Search.
2) From the Dashboard, click the Online Registrations tile.
3) Click the Transfers button next to the Player Registration form.
4) You will see a list of pending transfer requests for your club.
How to Review and Approve or Decline a Transfer Request
Reviewing player and transfer details
Each pending request shows key details:
- Player name and registration information
- If the player has registered with a 'Preferred Name', their name will be displayed in this format:
- FirstName (Preferred Name) Last Name
- If the player has registered with a 'Preferred Name', their name will be displayed in this format:
- ‘Leaving’ club (the player’s current club)
- ‘Joining’ club (the club the player wishes to join)
Click a player’s name to review more details if needed.
Approving or declining a transfer
Clicking the players name will allow you to Approve or Decline the request. These will only be visible if your club is required to make a decision for the request.
If you are the ‘leaving’ club:
- Review the request.
- Click Approve if you agree the player may transfer, or Decline if not.
Approving a transfer via email link or Transfers view
An email with a direct link will be sent to your club's site administrators notifying them of a transfer that requires approval. Click the link (or login to your club site navigating to Online Registrations transfers area) to action the transfer request.
Note: Transfers will be automatically approved 10 days after the transfer request is submitted if no manual action is taken prior.
What Happens After a Decision is Made?
- If the transfer is approved, the player is registered to the new club & their registration with the old club will be marked as transferred.
- If the transfer is declined, the player remains with their current club.
The transfer status with the club requesting the transfer is updated to "Active" or "Transfer Declined".
Permit Transfers
A permit transfer allows a player to temporarily play for a different club while still remaining registered to their original club. For example, when a player wants to participate in competitions or tournaments representing another club for a set period but does not want to permanently leave their existing club.
Permit transfers require approval from the club the player is temporarily joining. The permit process is managed within the same Māori rugby league transfers view in Sporty, and follows the same steps as a standard transfer. When requesting the transfer, the requesting club must select the permit option & provide the dates for which the permit will be active.
Once approved and the Permit "Start Date" is reached, the player will be automatically transferred to the requesting club. After the "End Date" has expired, the player will be automatically transferred back to their original club.
No further action is required by the administrators of either club after the permit is approved/denied.
